Despite the variety of options, a number of children in residential care cannot adapt in main stream schooling, due to severe trauma. Their problems are emotional rather than intellectual, but often that manifests in academic backlogs. For that reason Impact school was started at the Langlaagte campus, where children with severe trauma live. At this school about 21 children have the opportunity to learn in smaller groups, guided by qualified teachers with an understanding of the cognitive challenges the children face. The aim is to support the children’s therapeutic programmes and to strengthen them academically, emotionally, socially and mentally so that they can eventually be placed back into mainstream schooling, stronger and more in control of themselves.
